Linda,

NPR has a better story: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=123158799

I am wondering if the Washington Post report included background info on new base's destruction of the habitat of the critically endangered and nationally protected dugong (cousin to the Florida manatee).

I'd like to see more investigative reporting on why these bases are necessary. In other areas, US military bases have been closed.

Since China is the US' largest foreign financier, principal supplier of Walmart products, filled with US investors, and Japan's largest trading partner, it's unlikely it's going to start a war against Japan any time soon.

The US and Japan already have overkill capabilities against the only possible "enemy" North Korea which has asked for peace talks.

So what is this irrational, out-of-control US military build-up for?
